Training Overview
The Canadian cadet program has something for everybody. Mandatory and optional training takes place throughout the year at different times and locations. See below for more information and be sure to listen to announcements for details. New recruits are free to try different activities as long as once they’ve made a commitment to an activity they attend regularly.
Types of Training
Mandatory Training
Welcome to the Air Cadet! Mandatory training is crucial for all cadets, with standardized classes on Wednesday evenings. Training is divided into Levels, where you build on knowledge, qualify for promotions, and eventually lead younger cadets.
Complementary Training
Complementary training is crucial for enhancing standard training and is mandatory for all cadets. Activities like the Remembrance Day parade and camping trips are required. Similar to junior high option courses, every cadet must participate, but squadrons can choose the specific activities.
Optional Training
Get involved in exciting activities supported by our parent-sponsoring committee! Cadets can participate in sports, drill team, band, aviation ground school, and more. While not mandatory, we encourage your involvement, as it counts towards promotions and awards!
Band
Join the Squadron Band every Monday evening from September to June! Whether you're a beginner or looking to improve your skills, our members learn how to play various instruments as well as how to maintain and clean them. If you have a for music and want to play an instrument, we welcome you to be a part of our vibrant community!
Drill
Join us for the drill team, open to all 810 cadets! Practices are held every Monday from October to April, leading up to an exciting competition in Edmonton and the surrounding area each May. Don't miss the chance to showcase your skills and teamwork!
Fitness Activities
Join us throughout the year for exciting fitness activities open to all cadets of the Squadron! Our sessions are tailored to the interests of those who participate, ensuring a fun and engaging experience. Whether you enjoy basketball, volleyball, or other sports, there's something for everyone. Come be a part of our active community!
Marksmanship Team
Join us for marksmanship training, which occurs at various times throughout the year. team of cadets be selected to participate in this exciting competition. We encourage everyone to consider joining the team, as all are eligible to take part. Don't miss this opportunity to showcase your skills and compete your peers!
Biathlon
Biathlon training occurs year-round, with dedicated male and female teams honing their skills. These athletes train rigorously to compete at various levels, including provincial and national competitions. Their commitment and teamwork are essential as they strive for excellence in this challenging sport. Join us in supporting these talented individuals on their journey to success!
Effective Speaking
Join our program designed to enhance your public speaking and speech writing skills while boosting your confidence and leadership abilities. Open to cadets at any level, this competition runs annually March to May, providing a fantastic opportunity to develop your talents and showcase your skills. Don't miss the chance to grow and shine in a supportive environment!
Ground School
Welcome to our training program designed specifically for level 3 cadets and above! If you're eager to take your aviation skills to the next level and pursue the Glider Pilot or Power Pilot Training Course, you've come to the right place. Our comprehensive curriculum and experienced instructors will guide you every step of the way. Get to soar to new heights in your flying journey!
Field Training Exercise (FTX)
Join us for the Field Training Exercise (FTX Weekend, a unique chance for cadets to engage in vital training outside regular sessions. From Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, participants will stay at a camp facility, immersing themselves in activities that enhance their skills and teamwork. Don’t miss this opportunity to grow in a supportive environment!
Flag Party
Outstanding and highly motivated cadets often have the opportunity to attend summer training courses. This is a perfect opportunity for them to travel, make friends and discover an entirely different way of life! Cadets learn to manage their time and become more responsible, under the supervision of Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC) officers with specifically trained to work with teenagers.
Familiarization Gliding
Glider flying is a popular activity, with an average of 55,000 flights taking place each year. In Canada, a significant number of glider pilot licenses are obtained by Royal Canadian Air Cadets. To their certification, cadets must be at least 16 years old to take Transport Canada exam. This program not only fosters a love for aviation but also equips young individuals with valuable skills and experiences.
Familiarization flying
Welcome to our Familiarization Flying program! Here, you'll experience a comprehensive pre and post-flight briefing to ensure you're well-prepared. During the flight, you'll be introduced to the primary aircraft controls, allowing you to maneuver the aircraft with confidence. You'll have the chance to fly straight and level, execute turns, and gain insights into the flight instruments, making this an exciting and educational experience!
